Soulmate, Shmoal-mate

Blogger Downer #1: The create new post page takes too long to load. I don't think the problem is with my net connection since I am able to constantly reload Yahoo! So here I am, forced to compose my journal in the dull program that is notepad. -_-

Anyway, I just saw Before Sunset yesterday. And may I say, that was one of the best indie/mushy/not-so-mushy movies I have ever seen in a while. It was short, it was simple, and it was thought provoking (any movie that has this quality will surely find itself into my DVD collection).

There was one scene when Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke are in a car and are talking (well, that's basically what they do all throughout the movie). She [Julie Delpy] is ranting about the after effects of their one-night not-so-stand in Before Sunrise. She says that ever since that night, no one has ever made her feel the same way again, kind of like being unable to reach her expectations. One of the things she said during that rant was the idea of having a soulmate - the one and only person who can complete us - is cruel.... And you know what, it's true.

Just think. There are billions and billions of people in the world. Are we expected to believe that somewhere out there is one person with whom I can truly connect with? Doesn't anybody wonder how long before we actually meet them? In my case for example, I'm already 20 years old and I'm not planning to reach past 70... so am I expected that in the next 50 years of my life, out of all the people in the world, I will be able to meet my soulmate? What if he's somewhere in Timbuktu? I don't plan to go there. What if I don't plan on leaving the Philippines? What are the odds that he'll be able to find me here?

And if by some stroke of luck I am able to find him, what will make me say that "he's the one"? As humans, it's in our nature to be dissatisfied. We always want something more, we always want to go upward from where we are. If we meet, surely there's going to be a little voice in both our heads asking us, "Are you sure you wanna do this? What if there's someone else?" Then we might decide to part ways and try to search for something more. Fast forward when we're old and gray... we're far from one another, alone.

Its insane, the idea of the soulmate. Believing in one is increasing your expectations, most of the time pointlessly. Big, evil corporations are feeding on our emotions. Love is used to promote movies, sell CDs. When it comes to it, love can probably sell microwaves (kinda like Hello Kitty). Us consumers are left with no money and too much hope in the idea that we'll be able to find that certain someone.

In our world, in our small circle of friends/acquaintances, I'd like to think that we will be able to connect with someone. Maybe not totally, but at some level. Enough to make us stop and think "hey, this could really work out". Now that would definitely be better than having to stare up at the stars every night and wish that somewhere across the ocean, is a guy for me.

Moving In

Well. This is my third move this year. My third journal. Blurty sucked and MBlog closed without so much as a warning and took my precious journals with them.

Hopefully this will work out. *clasps hands in prayer*

Sadly though, I won't be able to post that much for the next couple of weeks. I'm currently busy on the thesis. But maybe I can squeeze in some time to post some of my salvaged journals. :D
